Wai Yin has moved premises!!! We moved in on 19th July 2010 and opened officially on 26th July 2010. It’s been a lot of work for our staff and our volunteers, so we would like to thank them for their hard work. We would also like to thank you for your patience during this time.

We now have three separate sites that will be used. Click the links below to find out the address and location of each of the buildings:
Once again, we would like to thank you for your patience. Our Learning Centre is still being refurbished. Some classes will be organised at our old premises of 61 Mosley Street, where we have a temporary reception.
The telephone number will remain the same. However, you can also +44 (0) 161 833 0377 if you have trouble getting through. Currently, the Learning Centre does not have a contact number.
Over the coming few weeks, we will hopefully have one seemless network at Wai Yin. By that, we mean that you can call any of our centre’s numbers (we will publish the Learning Centre’s number once it is available) and you can be transferred to any member of staff, regardless of where they are based. So you can call our Older People’s Centre and you can be transferred to someone at our Main Headquarters. However, we request that you only call our main numbers – +44 (0) 161 237 5908 and +44 (0) 161 833 0377, so that our staff aren’t overwhelmed with phone calls at our external centres.
We hope that this new adventure will be an exciting one, especially since Wai Yin now owns it’s main headquarters. We purchased 66-68 Swan Street in October 2009 and we have spent a long time refurnishing the building to make it home for as many of our services as we can. However, we felt that the building was too small for the Education, Training and Employment Unit to be housed in as well, and they have grown rapidly over the last few years, that they deserved their own place. We will hopefully be open for classes on Monday 2nd August 2010, but we will update you here if we are not ready.
Thank you for your co-operation and patience whilst we have made the move. We hope that you will visit our new centre’s and enjoy the work that Wai Yin has put into this to improve the services we deliver to the community of Manchester.
We’re moving!!! WY will be closed from 17th July and will reopen at our new premises on 26th July. http://www.waiyin.org.uk for more info.

Because of the weather, we have decided to postpone the AGM until 31st January. It will be held at 1.30pm at our Sheung Lok Cenrtre (click here for map).
There has been a lot of snow this year. It’s been proving difficult to get through the snow and ice and provide services for both our users and our staff. As a result, the management of Wai Yin have decided that the office will be closed from 3pm today, and will also be closed all day tomorrow. Normal service will be resumed on Thursday. We will update our website to let you know if this changes.
We hope that you will all stay safe and you will all take care whilst traveling.

On Tuesday 20th October, 2009, Wai Yin’s Dr Sylvia Sham was awarded the Mu Lan “Community Woman of the Year” award. Sylvia travelled to the House of Lords in London, where she was given the award by Baroness Jay of Paddington. This award was given to Sylvia, but Sylvia has been very modest in her achievement, and has often said that the work she has done is not her work, but is the work of Wai Yin, and she is just a part of this. Whilst at the event, Sylvia met many important people, including Cherie Blair. Sylvia was even lucky enough to get a copy of Cherie’s book signed by her!
Sylvia said “I am so proud to have been awarded the “Community Woman of the Year” award. This is thanks to the hard work of my team at Wai Yin – the management committee, the staff, the volunteers and the service users. Without those people, this would not have been possible. I would especially like to thank my fellow Senior Managers – Lisa Mok and Jenny Tsang. They are so proud of my achievements and Wai Yin’s achievements, and are able to bear witness to the generosity and praise that Wai Yin is awarded. It means so much to me that Wai Yin is recognised in this way.”
Sylvia was nominated for this award by Samantha Tran, who used to work for Wai Yin in our Youth Project before she left to work for Manchester City Council. Samantha still comes back regularly to visit Wai Yin, and still has a wonderful friendship with Wai Yin. Sylvia said it was a great honour to recieve the award and she was very touched that Samantha was the person who nominated her. Sylvia has done a lot of work for Wai Yin and the Chinese community, and we all think that this is an excellent accolade for her. Congratulations to Sylvia! We all hope her hard work continues for many years to come.
Photographs of Sylvia at the event can be found in our photo gallery.
